Enabling the Virtual Field Office – Part 3: Optimizing Operations Week by Week

This is Part 3 in this special series on maintaining efficient operations as more teams take operations online. Read Part 1 here & Part 2 here.

We at OspreyData want to do everything we can to help our customers respond and maintain steady progress in the wake of our global health crisis. We’re asking ourselves how lease operators, production engineers, and the control center can work together seamlessly – and now virtually – to manage and optimize the full field during this time.

For Part 3, we’re turning to the end of the week and planning for the weeks ahead. How can your entire team be better prepared for this week than last, even when working virtually?

Try these steps to assess your team’s performance and using those insights to plan & strategize:

  1. Create a contingency plan for when emergencies arise.
    • As these last few weeks have demonstrated, we live in very fluid times. Conduct periodic scenario planning sessions to help prepare your team when uncertainty arises. How do tasks get reassigned if half of the workforce is gone? What roles will be filled by who? Which tasks are priority to complete?
    • Maintain clear lines of communication and responsibility. If you’re out of commision, who’s responsible for your wells? Do your responsibilities roll up to your supervisor, or over to one of your peers? Determining an escalation plan is useful so you can begin to share and transfer key knowledge.
    • As highlighted in Part 2, leverage automated workflows as much as you can. If you’re not available, reassign tasks to your colleagues. Use standardized procedures so you know things will get done the same way you would do it yourself.   3. Analyze Task Completion rates to assess performance & strategize on improvements with your operators.
    • Supervisors can use our task completion reports to determine which tasks have been completed and which ones may need to be reassigned. Supervisors can also assess individual performance across a team and share feedback with their team members.
    • By looking at this data collaboratively, engineers can optimize workflow & task procedures with operators.
